Stables, Garvald And Bara Parish Church, Garvald

The property comprises a manse and stables dating from circa 1820. The manse is a two-storey, three-bay building constructed of rubble sandstone with ashlar dressings and droved quoins. The south elevation features a panelled door at the centre, set within a moulded surround and surmounted by a decorative fanlight. Sash and case windows with a 12-pane glazing pattern are positioned on either side of the door at ground level, and in each bay at the first floor. The north elevation has a projecting stairwell at the centre, featuring a window and a roof that slopes into the main roof pitch, with blank bays flanking. Single-storey rear extensions, originally flat-roofed, have been altered from an earlier form by Peter Whitson around 1952, reflecting the rising ground to the north. The east and west elevations each have two bays with windows at ground and first floor levels; the south bay on the east elevation is blind. The eastern elevation faces directly onto the graveyard. Wallhead stacks are present, and the roof is slated with lead flashings.

Contemporary with the manse are the stables, located to the southwest of the manse policies. These consist of two piend-roofed blocks: a smaller stable to the north with a door on the south side, and a carriage block to the south, featuring a segmental carriage arch. Both are built from the same materials as the manse and abut a retaining wall to the west.
