The Inn, Main Street, Garvald

The Inn is an earlier 19th century, two-storey, three-bay house located on Main Street, Garvald. Around 1840, a single bay was added to the east, and a later single-storey addition was built adjoining the west side. Constructed from roughly squared and snecked red rubble sandstone, the building features painted ashlar margins, with a base course to the west bays, and hoodmoulds over the circa 1840 windows.

The north-facing (street) elevation has a pilastered doorpiece centrally positioned beneath the doorway, flanked by windows, with further windows in each bay at the first floor. The eastern extension has two narrow windows at ground level and one at first floor. The single-storey western addition is slightly recessed, containing a doorway flanked by windows, and another window to the outer right.

The east gable is blank at ground level, with two blind first-floor windows and a narrow slit, below moulded corbelling of the gablehead stack. Both west gables and the rear elevation are harled, with modern additions to the rear.

The windows are sash and case with a 12-pane glazing pattern. Gable end stacks are present, along with ashlar coped skews with skewputts to the east gable. The roof is covered in slates. The corbelled form used in the east gable stack has a similarity to that found on cottages in Spott village of a comparable date. The statutory address is Garvald Hotel, Main Street, Garvald.
