The Rowans, Main Street, Garvald

The Rowans is a mid-19th century, two-story, three-bay house that has been extended to form an L-shaped plan. A 19th-century wing was added to the rear, with further additions at ground level. The house is constructed from squared and snecked rubble with ashlar margins, featuring a base course and raised quoins on the south side.

The south elevation has a deeply set, fanlit doorway at the centre, with a panelled door, flanked by windows at ground level, and windows in each bay on the first floor. The north elevation features a blank wall due to a later extension projecting centrally and to the right, along with two piend-roofed, single-story additions at ground level. Sash and case windows have a 12-pane glazing pattern. The roof is slated with piend slopes and has shouldered ashlar gable end stacks.

Retaining walls made from squared red rubble have ashlar coping. Square ashlar gate piers are also present. The Rowans served as the former Manse to the Free Church to the east, and was completed by 1862 when the building debt was cleared.
