Description
Whitelaws is a two-storey, three-bay house dating to around 1840. It is prominently sited on a bend in Main Street. The house is built of stugged, squared, and snecked sandstone with raised, droved ashlar dressings and eaves course; the rear and sides are of rubble.
The west elevation features a gabled porch advanced at the centre, with a round-arched doorway, two-leaf panelled doors, and a decorative fanlight. A slate roof covers the porch. Sash and case windows with a 12-pane glazing pattern are located on either side of the porch and in each bay at the first floor.
The south elevation has a canted bay added at ground level in the centre, topped with a stone roof. The remaining walls are blank. A single-storey, piend-roofed projection, likely added shortly after the house's construction, extends from the centre and right bays of the east elevation, featuring a window enlargement. Widely spaced first-floor windows are set into the outer bays. The north elevation formerly contained a service court, now covered as a garage, with blank first-floor bays.
The house has shouldered, ashlar coped wallhead stacks and a slated piend roof with lead flashings. Retaining walls include an ashlar coped rubble parapet wall to the west front and rubble garden walls.
A timber summerhouse, dating from the earlier 20th century, is in the garden. The house was allegedly built by a Mr Whitelaw and remained in his family until the 1960s; the house was held on a lease, hence the name.
