Manse, Garvald And Bara Parish Church, Garvald

This is a circa 1820 manse, built as part of the Garvald and Bara Parish Church complex. The building is two storeys high and has three bays on its front elevation. It is constructed from rubble sandstone with contrasting ashlar dressings and droved quoins.

The south elevation features a panelled door at the centre, surrounded by decorative mouldings and a fanlight. Sash and case windows with a 12-pane glazing pattern are located on either side of the door at ground floor level and in each bay above. The north elevation has a projecting stairwell in the centre, with a window and a roof that slopes into the main roof. Flanking the stairwell are blank bays. Later, flat-roofed single-storey rear extensions were added, altered from their original form around 1952 by Peter Whitson to accommodate the rising ground to the north. The east and west elevations each have two bays with windows at ground and first floor level; the south bay on each elevation is blind. The east elevation is situated directly alongside the church graveyard.

The building has wallhead stacks and a slated piend roof with lead flashings.

Contemporary with the manse are a pair of stables located to the southwest of the manse grounds. A smaller stable block is to the north, featuring a door on its south side. The carriage block is to the south, exhibiting a segmental carriage arch. Both stables are constructed from the same materials as the main house and abut a retaining wall to the west.
