Description
North Lodge, built around 1880, is a bold arch linked to a two-stage Baronial-style tower with an adjoining circular stair tower. The building is constructed from red sandstone ashlar with battered base courses, a string course, and chamfered arrises to the openings.
The west elevation has windows to the ground and first floors, with a taller tower to the right. Both the tower and the main block feature corbelled parapets with a blind circle and square ornament.
A round-arched gateway has a moulded surround to a semi-circle, with a raised parapet at the centre containing a blank panel. Flanking piers are topped with caps designed to match the stair tower parapet. The gate is constructed from squared and snecked rubble with an ashlar coped wall running north and south.
The east elevation includes a doorway set in a raised surround on the north return. A flat-roofed extension was added after 1952 at ground level.
The lodge was likely built during the period when the Abbey was owned by Walter Wingate Gray.
