Description

St Rules is an American shingle style house located on Marine Road in Dunbar, designed by T Duncan Rhind and dated 1903. It features a 3-bay extension to the west added in 1952. The building is two stories with an attic and a basement to the west. The eaves sweep over the first floor at intervals, creating an asymmetrical composition and plan. The exterior is constructed from snecked, squared, and coursed sandstone rubble, with small-pane glazing that has been altered in places. The roof is covered with Westmoreland slate and has deeply coped rubble stacks, contributing to the complex elevations.

On the entrance front, there is a two-storey porch with a door on the east side. The ground floor has a triple window, with an oriel window above and applied timber framing in the gable. A similar design detail is found in the adjoining dormer. To the west, there is a wide gabled bay, and a verandah or loggia extends from the east elevation to the north.

The north front features a main roof that sweeps over a semi-circular window on an off-centre gable, flanked by eyelid dormers. There is a balcony with cast-iron railings and steps leading up from the west, positioned over a canted window bay on the ground floor, with a door onto the balcony set in a recessed gable.

Inside, the porch includes painted strip-panelling, while the former drawing room has a timber beamed ceiling and a recessed fireplace. Decorative window latches and white panelled doors with brass handles are present in the extension. The property is also marked by ashlar sandstone gate piers and a rubble wall.
