Description
The Eden Hotel, located on Belhaven Road in Dunbar, is an earlier 19th-century, two-storey building with an attic and basement. This symmetrical, three-bay classical house is constructed from red sandstone coursed rubble, featuring droved ashlar dressings and a facade with raised plain margins and rusticated quoins. It has plate glass sash windows with 12-pane glazing.
On the north entrance front, there is a stone flight of steps adorned with decorative wrought-iron balustrades. The entrance features an Ionic doorpiece with a cornice and blocking course, along with a panelled door and fanlight. The fenestration is symmetrical, and there are two slated dormers.
The south face includes a full-height canted bay at the center, which has a door at the basement level and two lights on the first and second floors. The west front has a full-height gabled extension block built around 1896. This extension is made of rendered concrete, resting on and overhanging a single-storey basement projection, and features mock windows, a door, and an oriel window. It was designed by Henry F Kerr from Edinburgh for use as a photographic dark room, pantry, bathroom, and lift.
The east face has a flat-roofed extension block at the basement and ground floor, which includes a door and windows. The basement windows have been altered at the sides and rear.
Inside, the hotel has been much altered, but some decorative plasterwork and shutters remain.
