Windmill, Knockenhair, Dunbar

Windmill at Knockenhair, Dunbar, was designed by R Weir Schultz between 1907 and 1910 and features an Arts and Crafts butterfly plan. The building is harled with ashlar doorways and a porch, topped with slate roofs and a variety of sash windows with small-pane glazing.

The entrance front has an advanced bay that is off-centre to the west, featuring an ogee roof. To the left, there is a two-bay pilastered porch in a re-entrant angle. To the east, there are two later doors with an architrave above, and two flat-roofed dormers.

On the north rear side, there is a three-storey off-centre canted bay that is corbelled out above the eaves level, also with an ogee roof. This side has random openings and two flat-roofed dormers.

The west side gable features a two-canted bay with a slated roof and an advanced chimney stack to the north. The east side gable has an advanced stack to the north and windows to the south, along with a single-storey flat-roofed block to the east that links with the windmill.

The interiors have been significantly altered due to the division of the house, with carpentry and joinery work completed by R McArthur and Sons of East Linton and Dunbar.

The windmill itself dates back to the 18th century and is constructed of harled sandstone rubble, topped with a slated cone roof. It has a projecting base with a door to the east and narrow windows located under the eaves. The interior has been converted for habitation.

The lodge, also designed by R Weir Schultz between 1907 and 1910, is a single-storey building with a mansard attic addition to the north. It has a rectangular plan with an extension to the north, is harled, and features a slate piended and mansard roof. The lodge has mainly sash windows with small-pane glazing, a ridge stack, and an entrance through a timber porch that is recessed into the southwest corner.
