Description

The Lodge and Stables at The Grange on Grange Road in North Berwick was designed by R S Lorimer in 1893. This substantial two-storey Arts and Crafts lodge features dormer-heads that break the eaves, and it is accompanied by a single-storey and loft stable to the west, which has a half-piended swept roof outbuilding at the rear. The exterior is harled with red ashlar dressings.

On the southeast elevation, there are irregular openings. The stable block includes two high windows, which are mirrored in the outer west bays of the higher block, with a doorway located beneath the right window. The centre has three grouped bays, and the southeast angle is chamfered with a window at ground level, corbelled to a square above. The shaped or gabletted dormer-heads add character, and an attic dormer was added later to the left.

The northeast elevation features a forestair to the left leading to a doorway in a Dutch gabled porch at the top, along with two gabled shaped dormers. There is a single-storey outbuilding with a swept roof projecting at the centre, and to the right, the lower eaves of the former stable have a crowstepped dormer window for the hayloft.

The east elevation displays a variety of windows and an off-centre stack that breaks through the crowsteps to the left. The sash and case windows have small-pane glazing, and the crowsteps are made of ashlar with beak skewputts. The roofs are covered with pantiles, and the harled stacks are complemented by a cockerel weathervane on the higher west gable.

The property is enclosed by rubble boundary walls that extend west to Power House Cottage.
