Description
Electricity House and Sawmill, located at the Old Place of Mochrum, was designed by Robert Weir Schultz in 1903. This building features an L-shaped electricity house connected to a rectangular sawmill on the east side. It is a single-storey structure made of rubble, with rubble lintels and projecting cills. The square window vents have cream sandstone ashlar mullioned and transomed margins, and the windows are fitted with small-pane glazing. The building has crowstepped gables, constructed from small stones and topped with thin stone coping, and is covered with slightly graded grey slates. Small leaded eyebrow ventilators are also present.
On the south elevation, there is a door to the right, topped with a gable that has a lozenge inscribed with "1903" in the gablehead. Two windows are located to the left, while the sawmill is advanced to the right. The west elevation features an advanced gable to the right, with a door on the left and a window on the right, along with a window on the northern return. There are three window vents to the left. The north elevation is gabled, with a central door flanked by narrow windows and a square ashlar panel in the gablehead. The east elevation has three window vents to the right, with the sawmill adjoining the gable to the left.
Inside, the electricity house has timber coombed ceilings and retains its original generating machinery. The sawmill has a door on the left leading to the south gable, while the north gable is open. There is also a lean-to made of corrugated sheeting attached to the east elevation, and the sawmill is connected to the electricity house on the west side.
