Description

The Saw Mill at Edgerston House, built around 1837, is a former two-storey, three-bay T-plan crowstepped sawmill that was converted into a single dwelling in 1991. The building is constructed of rubble with stugged ashlar dressings and features crowstepped gables.

On the north elevation, the entrance door is centrally located at ground level, with a projecting gabled bay above it supported by a corbel course. This bay includes a single window and a thistle finial. The flanking bays have large windows at ground level, with the right bay formed from a former cart opening that has a timber lintel. The first-floor windows break the eaves and are topped with gabled dormerheads.

The east elevation features a large segmental-headed window at ground level, which was a former cart opening, and a first-floor window that is offset to the left. There is a projecting single-storey, single-bay harled lean-to addition on the south side.

On the south elevation, there is a back door to the addition at the far right. The central bay is wide and advanced, featuring a cat-slide roof and a small window at the eaves, which was once a wheel-house and is now a large kitchen. There is also a window in the west return, a stair window to the left, and a much-altered half-boarded window at the far left.

The west elevation has a door at the centre on the ground floor and a tripartite window with tall, narrow, round-headed lights above. A low retaining wall and a glass lean-to roof abut at right angles.

The windows are made of timber with vertical paning; some are fixed while others are casement. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there are tall ashlar diamond-shaped end stacks on square bases with deep coping and moulded skewputts. The interior was completely rebuilt in 1991.
