Description
The cottages at 7 Craigielaw Farm Cottages date from around 1835 and were constructed as a symmetrical, shallow U-shaped row of six single-storey farm cottages for the Wemyss Estate. They are built of squared and snecked sandstone, with ashlar dressings, and feature hoodmoulds above the main openings. The design is in a neo-Tudor style, reminiscent of Bothy Cottage within the Gosford Estate.
The row is arranged around a central pend with Tudor arches, flanked by two cottages on either side. Each cottage has a central door flanked by windows, and there are two piended dormers on the roof of the attic space. The end cottages are L-shaped, with doors on their inner returns. Later lean-to porch additions are present at the rear. Some of the original windows have been replaced, with cement-rendered surrounds, though the remaining sash and case windows retain a 12-pane glazing pattern at ground floor level and 4-pane glazing in the dormers. The roof is piended and covered in grey slates, with an ashlar cope along the ridge and wallhead stacks. A low, harled retaining wall with crenellated rubble coping encloses the front gardens.
References include C McWilliam’s Lothian (1978), J M Robinson’s Georgian Model Farms (1983), and an Ordnance Survey map of Haddingtonshire from 1854.
