Description

This is an 1835 farmhouse built in a “Burn-school Jacobethan” style for the Wemyss Estate. It is a two-story building constructed of squared and coursed ashlar stone, with chamfered arrises and hoodmoulds over the main openings. The sides and rear are of squared and stugged red sandstone. A later wing extends to the north, and there are lean-to additions at the rear of the building.

The main south elevation has three bays, with a broad, advanced, gabled bay on the left. A gabled porch projects from the center, set within a re-entrant angle. The porch has a doorway with deep, stop-chamfered reveals and a strip fanlight above. Single windows are located to either side of the porch on the ground floor, and above each bay on the first floor, with gabled dormerheads breaking the eaves. The west elevation features three windows on each floor, with gabled dormerheads breaking the eaves on the first floor. The east elevation has a single window at ground floor to the gable end, and two windows at first floor.

The later north wing is four bays wide and constructed of grey sandstone. The windows are sash and case, with a 12-pane glazing pattern on the first floor. Ground floor and north wing windows have plate glass glazing. The roof is covered with grey slates, with coped skews and decorative beak skewputts. Large, coped ashlar stacks have decorative cans.

The style and date of this farmhouse are similar to Craiglielaw Cottages to the east and Bothy Cottage within the Gosford estate (which are listed separately).
