Description
These are a group of six single-storey farm cottages, arranged in a symmetrical, shallow U-shape, dating back to around 1835 and originally part of the Wemyss Estate. Constructed of squared and snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings, the cottages display a neo-Tudor style similar to Bothy Cottage within the Gosford estate. They are arranged around a central pend, with two cottages flanking the Tudor-arched pend on either side. Each cottage has a central door flanked by windows, and two piend-roofed dormers light the attic space. The end cottages have an L-shaped plan, with doors positioned on the inner return. Later lean-to porches have been added to the rear. Some replacement sash and case windows have been fitted, surrounded by cement rendering, although the original windows retain a 12-pane glazing pattern at ground floor and 4-pane glazing to the dormers. The roofs are piended and covered in grey slates, with ashlar coped ridges and wallhead stacks. A low, harled retaining wall with crenellated rubble coping encloses the front gardens. Publications by C McWilliam (1978) and J.M. Robinson (1983) provide further details, along with an Ordnance Survey map of Haddingtonshire from 1854.
