Description
This is a row of six single-storey farm cottages, built around 1835 as part of the Wemyss Estate. They are arranged in a symmetrical, shallow U-shape, with a central pend. The cottages are constructed of squared and snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings, and feature hoodmoulds above the main openings. The design is in a neo-Tudor style, reminiscent of Bothy Cottage within the nearby Gosford estate.
The cottages are organised with two flanking a Tudor-arched pend on each side of the central structure. Each cottage has a central door flanked by windows, and two piend-roofed dormers provide attic access. The end cottages have an L-shaped plan with doors to the inner return. Later lean-to porches have been added to the rear. Some later windows have been inserted, and are surrounded by cement rendering. The original windows are sash and case, with a 12-pane glazing pattern on the ground floor and 4-pane glazing in the dormers. The roof is piended, covered in grey slates, and has ashlar coping to the ridge and wallhead stacks. The front gardens are enclosed by a low harled retaining wall with crenellated rubble coping.
