Description

Dating to circa 1835, 12 Craigielaw Farm Cottages form a symmetrical, shallow U-shaped row of six single-storey farm cottages originally part of the Wemyss Estate. The cottages are built of squared and snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings and feature hoodmoulds above the main openings. The design is in a neo-Tudor style similar to Bothy Cottage within the nearby Gosford estate.

The layout comprises two cottages on each side of a central pend featuring a Tudor arch. Each cottage has a central door flanked by windows, and two piended dormers are present in the attic space. The end cottages have an L-plan, with doors to the inner return. Later lean-to porches have been added to the rear. Some replacement windows have been inserted, surrounded by cement rendering. The windows are sash and case, with a 12-pane glazing pattern at ground floor level and a 4-pane pattern in the dormers. Grey slates cover the piended roof, and the roof features ashlar coped ridges and wallhead stacks. A low harled retaining wall with crenellated rubble coping defines the front gardens. References to the cottages appear in C McWilliam's Lothian (1978), J M Robinson’s Georgian Model Farms (1983), and on an Ordnance Survey map of Haddingtonshire from 1854.
