Description
An earlier 19th-century neo-Tudor cottage, built as an L-plan single-storey structure, likely incorporating a former potting shed. It is situated as a lean-to against the northwest corner of the walled garden within the Garden Plantation at Gosford House. The cottage is constructed from squared and snecked red sandstone with ashlar dressings, featuring chamfered reveals and hoodmoulds. The north range has five bays; a former central doorway has been blocked and replaced with a window, with further windows positioned to the outer right and outer left. A separate five-bay range adjoins at a right angle to the east, with a central doorway and two narrower windows on each side. The windows are sash and case with lying-pane glazing. Some rear windows have been enlarged and have cement-rendered surrounds, including two plate glass bipartites. The roof is a lean-to design with grey slates, ashlar coped skews and wallhead, and four ashlar coped wallhead stacks, two of which have been reduced. It forms an A-Group with other buildings on the Gosford Estate, as detailed in associated notes for Gosford House. Historic maps of Haddingtonshire from 1854 and plans from 1808, titled "The Pleasure Grounds of Gosford," provide further context.
