Description
This is an early 19th-century walled garden, located within the Garden Plantation at Gosford House. The garden measures approximately 150 by 100 metres and is enclosed by rubble walls with ashlar coping. The south-facing walls are lined with brick and incorporate five segmental arches defining a central dividing wall. A south-facing lean-to greenhouse is attached to the north wall on the western side, built on an ashlar base course and topped with an ashlar coped parapet featuring two sculpted swans. The swans are a Wemyss family emblem, also visible on Gosford House and Stables. Other greenhouses that originally stood along the north wall have been removed. The Bothy Cottage (formerly a potting shed) and Gardener’s Cottage are listed as separate buildings. The garden is part of a wider group of buildings associated with the Gosford Estate. Historical records, including an Ordnance Survey map from 1854, document the site.
