Description
A mausoleum dating from circa 1800, built by Francis, 5th Earl of Wemyss, who was later interred within. The mausoleum is a neo-classical structure taking the form of a grey ashlar pyramid atop a cube, raised above a fosse with a circular enclosure. Four tetrastyle Tuscan porticoes, with two steps leading up to each, provide access, although only the western doorway is currently in use. A rubble retaining wall, topped with joggled ashlar coping, borders the enclosure.
At the southwest entrance to the enclosure stand two large gatepiers, each featuring a cornice and surmounted by crouching figures wielding flaying knives. An avenue leads from the mausoleum to a second pair of gatepiers located approximately 30 metres to the southwest, also possessing a cornice and cast-iron overthrow.
The mausoleum forms part of a group of buildings associated with the Gosford Estate. Historic documents include John Ainslie’s Plan of the Pleasure Grounds of Gosford from 1808, Sir J Balfour Paul’s THE SCOTS PEERAGE (1904), W Forrest's Map of Haddingtonshire from 1799, and David Douglas’s MEMORIALS OF THE FAMILY OF WEMYSS Vol I (1907).
