Description
This early 19th-century curling house is located near the lake at Gosford House. It has a distinctive picturesque design, built with a single, oval-shaped chamber. The exterior is characterized by rustic construction using tufa rockwork, extending to form low curtain walls with occasional pinnacles, and embellished with large shells attached to the ground. A round arched entrance is set within an advanced porch, featuring decorative glazing. The roof is polygonal and made of zinc.
Inside, the curling house features timber panelling and lockers designed to hold curling stones. Originally, the structure was thatched in a “cottage orne” style, according to a description by J Hunt in Country Life in 1971. An associated icehouse is also walled with tufa. The curling house forms part of a larger group of buildings on the Gosford Estate, and its significance is understood in the context of Gosford House itself. Plans by J Ainslie from 1808 document the pleasure grounds of Gosford.
