Description
This is an early 19th-century stone footbridge, one of two identical structures spanning a man-made water course. The bridge is constructed from random rubble with an ashlar parapet. A small, narrow arch is flanked by drum piers, and the parapet is topped with cast-iron railings featuring urn and arrowhead finials.
The footbridge forms part of a network of drains, as shown on contemporary plans, which channel water to ornamental lakes. Landscape designer J.C. Loudon attributes the landscaping to Ramsay (in association with Wemyss House), a detail noted in his ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF GARDENING on page 1251. The bridge is part of a group of buildings within the Gosford Estate. An earlier survey by J. Ainslie in 1808 details the grounds, and an Ordnance Survey map from 1854 depicts the bridge's setting.
