Description

Kennels, built in the early 19th century, form a symmetrical single-story block comprising two identical cottages, with dog kennels and game larders arranged around a courtyard. The building is constructed from squared and coursed red sandstone with ashlar dressings, and features a continuous eaves course that extends along the returns, as well as pedimented gables.

The west elevation is six bays wide, with corniced doorways situated in the bays before the end, flanked by Venetian windows. These Venetian windows are repeated on the gables, with small, blind circular windows placed above in the triangular spaces (tympana). The building includes polygonal ashlar stacks. Irregular additions have been made at the rear.

At the rear, low walls with ashlar coping are partially curved and incorporate arrowhead spiked wrought-iron railings enclosing the kennel runs. A single-story block, facing west, is located to the north side, with a projecting game larder at the centre. An unusual latticed larder is positioned at the first floor level, with slate cladding on its flanks. The outer bays break the eaves line and have a gabled projection to the left and a piend-roofed projection to the right. Two additional, free-standing wooden game larders located to the north are listed separately.

Reputedly built using labour from Hungarian prisoners of war during the Napoleonic Wars, the kennels are part of the wider group of buildings associated with the Gosford Estate; further details can be found in the listing for Gosford House. Historic maps from 1854 show the building’s layout.
