Description
Early 19th century kennels, forming a symmetrical block of two cottages with dog kennels and game larders arranged around a courtyard. The building is constructed of squared and coursed red sandstone with ashlar dressings, incorporating a continuous eaves course and pedimented gables.
The west elevation features six bays. Two corniced doorways are positioned in the bays before the end, flanked by Venetian windows with blind side panels and semi-circular panels above, decorated with painted Y-tracery. Matching Venetian windows are found on the gables, with small blind circular windows placed above within the tympana. Polygonal ashlar stacks are present. Rear extensions are irregular.
Low, ashlar-coped walls at the rear partly curve and incorporate arrowhead spiked wrought-iron railings enclosing kennel runs. A kennel block to the east encloses the courtyard, featuring three doorways and windows. A single-storey range faces west to the north, with a central projecting game larder. An unusual latticed larder is found on the first floor, with slate cladding on the flanks. The outer bays break the eaves, with a gabled structure on the left and a piend-roofed section on the right. Two additional free-standing wooden game larders, situated to the north, are listed separately.
The building is reputedly constructed by Hungarian prisoners of war from the Napoleonic Wars. It forms part of the A-Group of buildings associated with the wider Gosford Estate, as detailed in the notes for Gosford House. Historic maps from 1854 show the layout of the site.
