Description

The Game Larders, associated with Hungary House at Gosford House, date from the early 19th century. They comprise a symmetrical single-storey block of two cottages, along with dog kennels and game larders arranged around a courtyard. The buildings are constructed of squared and coursed red sandstone with ashlar dressings, featuring an eaves course that continues around the returns, and pedimented gables.

The west elevation has six bays. Two corniced doorways are positioned in the bays second from the ends, flanked by Venetian windows containing blind side panels and semi-circular panels above featuring painted Y-tracery. This Venetian window design is repeated in the gables, with small blind circular windows set above in the tympana. Polygonal ashlar stacks are present. Irregular additions extend from the rear.

At the rear, low walls with ashlar coping, partly curved and incorporating arrowhead spiked wrought-iron railings enclosing the kennel runs, are present. The kennel block enclosing the courtyard on the east side contains three doorways and windows. A single-storey range facing west to the north includes a projecting game larder in the centre. An unusual latticed larder is located on the first floor, with slate cladding on the sides. The outer bays break the eaves, with a gabled section to the left and a piend-roofed section to the right. Two additional free-standing wooden game larders to the north are listed separately.

It is believed that these buildings were constructed by Hungarian prisoners of war from the Napoleonic Wars. They form an A-Group with other buildings on the Gosford Estate; further details can be found in the notes relating to Gosford House. An Ordnance Survey map of Haddingtonshire from 1854 provides a historical reference point.
