Description
Hungary House, part of the Gosford House estate, is an early 19th-century building consisting of two cottages linked by dog kennels and game larders forming a courtyard. It is constructed of squared and coursed red sandstone with ashlar dressings, featuring a continuous eaves course and pedimented gables.
The west elevation is a symmetrical six-bay block. Two corniced doorways are flanked by Venetian windows with blind side panels and semi-circular panels above, featuring painted Y-tracery. This Venetian window design is repeated in the gables, with small blind circular windows set within the tympana. The building has polygonal ashlar chimney stacks. Irregular additions have been made to the rear.
At the rear, low, ashlar-coped walls curve and incorporate arrowhead-spiked wrought-iron railings enclosing the kennel runs. A single-storey block to the east contains three doorways and windows. A west-facing range to the north includes a projecting game larder, and an unusual latticed larder at first floor level, with slate cladding on its flanks. The outer bays break the eaves, with one gabled and one piend-roofed. Two freestanding wooden game larders to the north are listed separately.
The building is reputedly associated with Hungarian prisoners of war from the Napoleonic Wars. It forms an A-Group with other buildings on the Gosford Estate, as detailed elsewhere. Historic maps of Haddingtonshire from 1854 provide further context.
