Description
The Bield comprises a mid-19th century group of six single-story farm cottages arranged in a U-plan. The cottages are constructed of roughly squared and snecked rubble stone with grey ashlar dressings. The south-facing front features a central pend, with a door flanked by two windows on either side. Two cottages are set at right angles to the main block, extending southwards with a lower wing that forms the U-plan. Cottages on the inner courtyard have a window to their gable and a door on the return side. The outer cottages are positioned to form pairs of south-facing gables at the east and west ends, featuring a window to the gable, a door, and three windows on each return. The windows are sash and case with a four-pane glazing pattern. The roof is covered with red pantiles, featuring a slate easing course, straight skews, and ashlar-coped stacks. The complex is shown on the Ordnance Survey map of Haddingtonshire from 1854.
