Description

The Queens Hotel on Main Street in Gullane is likely a late 18th century building that originally consisted of a 3-bay house, which has seen various significant additions in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The south elevation features a 3-bay central section that represents the earlier house, which may have originally been three stories but now has a ground floor and a tall first floor, with matching heights to the pavilions. The tall pavilions on either side are three stories high. The west pavilion dates from the early 19th century and has a small window on the ground and second floors, with a tripartite window on the first floor. The east pavilion was added around 1910 to create balance.

On the west elevation, there is a tall, advanced canted wing that likely post-dates the west pavilion. A modern flat-roofed projecting porch is located in the re-entrant angle, which used to extend to the right at ground level.

The original house and west pavilion are constructed from rubble with ashlar margins and quoins, while the east pavilion and west canted wing are harled. The sash and case windows maintain a 12-pane glazing pattern, and the roofs are covered with slate. There are also modern rear extensions and a walled service court from the early 19th century adjacent to the east elevation.

Inside, some original features remain, including a fine plaster cornice with a decorative plasterwork panel above it, as well as a fine plaster cornice in the first-floor drawing room of the canted bay. There is also a rubble boundary wall to the north.
