Description

Glebe Cottage is a two-storey Arts and Crafts house built around 1900, which incorporates an earlier L-plan cottage. The exterior is constructed from pink sandstone rubble, featuring a stugged ashlar section on the south side. The windows are sash and case with small pane glazing, and the roof is covered with grey slates, complemented by overhanging eaves.

The west elevation, facing the street, is asymmetrical with various openings. It has a central gable with a stair window and two small windows below. To the left, the gable sweeps down and is interrupted by single-storey projecting outbuildings. To the right of the centre, there are two bays with a piend roofed dormer that breaks the eaves. The masonry shows evidence of the earlier cottage.

The north elevation is also asymmetrical and follows a U-plan. It features a broad projecting wing on the left that curves to the north, with a canted flat-roofed projection in the re-entrant angle and a parapet that breaks the eaves. A lean-to porch is attached, with the main roof sweeping over it. There are three wallhead dormers and a bold stack that projects from the service wing.

The south elevation presents a near-symmetrical U-plan, with stugged ashlar on the ground floor, which has four recessed bays at the centre and a door on the west side. The outer gables are advanced, and the line of the former cottage gable is evident on the left. A Venetian window is located on the first floor of the right gable.

Inside, there are some marble or stone chimneypieces with tiled recesses and decorative cast iron grates. The ceilings are beamed, and the floors are laid with flagstones.

The property is enclosed by a rubble boundary wall with circular section gatepiers, and there is a flagged terrace in the recessed area to the south, which is situated by rising ground.
