Description

St Adrian's Episcopal Church, located on Sandy Loan in Gullane, was designed by Reginald Fairlie in 1926. This is a simple, aisleless church built in the Arts and Crafts neo-Norman style, constructed from mannered cream sandstone rubble. The church features a 5-bay nave and a 2-bay chancel, with a low tower attached to the north end of the nave, which was completed in 1935.

The tower has a single round-headed light with a chamfered margin on its second stage, a simple doorway on the east side, and two round-arched lights on the west. The upper stage is shallow, with three narrow slits on each face, situated above an ashlar set-off and an ashlar eaves course. The roof is pyramidal with a finial, and there is a gabled porch projecting at the northwest. The north side features a round arched opening with double panelled doors leading to the inner doors. The nave windows are round-arched, while the chancel has pointed windows with loop tracery, including an east window topped with a cross finial. There is also a lean-to harling chamber at the southwest and swept eaves on the slated pyramidal roof.

Inside, the vestry is located at the foot of the tower and is accessed from the nave. The wide chancel arch is supported by sandstone piers, and the chancel has a panelled timber coomb ceiling with circular vents. The chancel floor is made of parquet, installed in 1927. A stone pulpit features blind Norman arches, and there is a decorative burnished steel lectern from 1926, along with a wall book-rest and a stair balustrade leading to the pulpit. The windows do not have embrasures, and some stained glass is present. The chancel is tripartite, designed by Douglas Strachan around 1926, and there is an organ installed in 1947.
