Description

St Peter's Church in Gullane dates to 1908, with significant enlargement of a late 19th century church through the addition of a massive, squat tower and alterations to the existing structure. The church is constructed from squared and snecked pink sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings, and features chamfered arrises to the openings.

The north elevation displays the gable of the original church with a tall, pointed arch containing a roll-moulded centre door and window bay. The door surround is chamfered with an ogee-detailed lintel, and a blind panel sits above an arcaded lintel, above which is a tripartite, pointed arched window with cusped and loop tracery, stepped over by a string course bearing a corbel. A recessed, flat-roofed porchway flanks the gable to the left, with a double doorway featuring a decoratively chamfered lintel.

On the south elevation, a central advanced gable is flanked by pentice-roofed bays. Small, tripartite, depressed arched lights are set within chamfered ogee surrounds, with a hexagonal panel above containing a stair window. A slit is visible in the gablehead, topped with a decorative Greek cross finial. Single lights appear in the aisle bays featuring ogee lintels. A recessed bay is located to the left of a side chapel, and a battered buttress connects to the tower on the right.

The east elevation is dominated by a two-stage, squat tower at the centre, featuring three round arched windows with mouchette tracery at ground level, above which are three ogee windows. An advanced porch is situated to the right. Recessed bays of the original church contain two tripartite windows to the right, and a plain tripartite window above the doorway to an aisle bay to the outer left.

The west elevation presents an advanced gable of the side chapel, adjoining the tower, with a four-light, loop traceried pointed arched window at the centre. Three ogee windows are located in the upper stage of the tower, with a ladder of corbels stepping up from the left. Two tripartite windows are visible in the original church to the left. The windows are fitted with square lead-pane glazing. A coped blocking course to the tower is stepped at the corners.

The church is roofed with slate, topped by a broached hexagonal spire. A louvred ventilator with a slated apron and pyramidal roof sits on the ridge of the earlier church. A fine, wrought-steel crown finial adorns the spire, complemented by decorative gutter heads.

Inside, there are no significant features from the earlier church. The apse is barrel vaulted, while the tower features a trabeated timber ceiling with folk art, Scandinavian-style painting to the beams and decorative details. Broad, low arches are found in the north, east, and west tower walls, with waved chamfering to the clerestory lintels. Decorative stencilling is present in the apse, attributed to W A Campbell. A finely carved timber screen separates the side bays, designed by Joseph Armitage. Primitive stained glass is found in the four-light transept window, dated 1909 and dedicated to the architect’s father. A three-light chancel window commemorates his mother. A copied rubble retaining wall is present, with simple railings.
