Description
32 Hopetoun Terrace in Gullane is a group of six symmetrical, semi-detached District Council houses designed by W J Walker Todd in 1919. The houses are built in three designs, featuring single storey and attic as well as two-storey structures with a second storey that breaks the eaves. They are constructed from squared and snecked Rattlebag stone, with ashlar lintels and eaves quoins. The sash and case windows have an 8 and 12-pane glazing pattern, and the roofs are slated, with grey for the two-storey houses and green for the single-storey ones. The eaves are swept.
For the front elevations of houses 29, 31, 37, and 39, the design follows a U-plan with four bays. The ground floor features mirrored windows in the centre bays, while the upper windows have gabled dormer heads. The outer bays are advanced gables with single windows, and the entrances are located on the side elevations.
The rear elevations display an advanced M-gable with lower outer eaves at the centre. Doorways are flanked by symmetrical windows of varying sizes, and there are end and ridge stacks.
Houses 33 and 35 have a U-plan front elevation with two windows in the centre and gablet dormer heads above. The outer bays are advanced gables featuring bipartite windows on the ground floor and single windows on the first floor. The doorway is centrally located on the side elevation, flanked by small windows and narrow stair windows above.
The rear elevation has two recessed bays at the centre with gabled dormers above the first-floor lights, along with advanced gabled outer bays.
For houses 32 and 34, as well as 40 and 42, the entrance elevation features an advanced N-gable in the centre bays, with outer eaves that are swept lower. The centre has bipartite windows with outer doors, while the recessed outer bays have piend roofs, a small light in the re-entrant angle, and a single outer light.
The rear elevations are similar to the front.
