Description

Tonderghie House is a mid-18th century symmetrical house featuring two storeys, an attic, and a basement, with single-storey pavilions on either side connected by curved corridors. The exterior is finished with harled walling and has raised painted margins and angles.

On the north elevation, there are steps with a wrought-iron handrail leading up to a margined doorway, which contains a panelled door topped with a fanlight. Flanking the main door are single light windows, and there are three smaller single light windows on the first floor. All windows are sash and case with 12-pane glazing. The eaves cornice is present, along with a pair of later 19th-century gabled timber dormers.

The south elevation features all single light windows, with a 20th-century addition at the center that includes a projecting harled full-height bay with a brick construction and a piended slate roof. Both elevations have a moulded eaves cornice, end skews with skewputts, and tall coped end stacks with thackstanes, as well as a sandstone ridge and well-maintained graded slate roofs.

The pavilions have curving quadrant corridors with a moulded eaves cornice and single basement windows. The original three-bay fronts have undergone some alterations, particularly at the rear. The single windows have painted margins, and the pavilions feature end skews, coped stacks, and good graded slate roofs. The rear of the east pavilion includes large vehicle entrances.

Inside, most doors and doorcases are original, and many shutters, along with some panelling and chimneypieces, remain, showcasing good quality 18th-century craftsmanship.
