Description
The Gardener’s Cottage, part of the complex associated with Physgill House, is probably from the early 19th century. It forms part of a large walled garden, linked by a stable and cottage block. The walled garden is enclosed by rubble walls approximately 14 inches high, with coping stones, and divides into two compartments.
The stable and cottage block is a low, two-storey range constructed of rubble, with later cottage bays that have been partly harled. There are irregular openings with segmental carriage arches, which are now blocked. Above these are hayloft windows set under the eaves, and a swept hayloft dormer is located above the cottage bays. A pend, or gateway, runs through the cottage addition, and there are various other windows.
The windows have a variety of glazing. The stable bays are roofed with graded slates, with a sandstone ridge and a brick wallhead stack. The cottage bays have more modern roofing, along with later ridge stacks.
The statutory address for the listing was revised in 2018 to correct a typographical error, and it was previously listed as 'Physgill House, Walled Garden and Stables'.
