Description
Physgill House is an altered mid-18th century house. It was originally enclosed on three sides by a larger early 19th century classical country house, which was demolished around 1959, leaving the original house standing alone. A 2-storey, piend-roofed pavilion at the east end is a remnant of the earlier country house.
The house has a rectangular plan and extends over three storeys, with a basement, and includes a 2-storey addition to the west, built in 1959. Most windows are single-light, sash and case, with 12 panes of glass. The south elevation is of painted rubble, with rendered raised margins, and has three bays, with a gable over the right-hand bay. The north elevation is of rubble with polished red sandstone margins, arranged in four regular bays. The east elevation, originally part of the 19th century house, comprises rubble with polished red sandstone angles and margins, and was originally two storeys high but has been reduced to single storey. It features a single-light window with a pediment and architrave set within a semi-circular panel, and has a piended roof. The west elevation is a 2-storey, 5-bay harled wing, added in 1959, with single-light windows.
The house has slate roofs, with end and axial stacks and end skews. The interior of the 18th century portion of the house has been significantly altered, with only a few original features such as some doors and shutters on the top floor remaining. A drawing of the early 19th century house is held in the National Monuments Record of Scotland. Alterations were carried out in 1959 by A C Wolfe and Partners, of Gatehouse of Fleet.
