Description
The South Walled Garden at Physgill House is probably from the early 19th century. It consists of a large walled garden enclosed by rubble walls approximately 14 feet high, finished with coping stones, and divided into two compartments. A stable and cottage block links to the garden.
The stable/cottage block is a low, two-storey range constructed of rubble, with some later cottage bays that have been harled. It features irregular openings in the form of segmental carriage arches, now blocked, with hayloft windows set under the eaves above and a swept hayloft dormer visible near the cottage bays. A pend (a passage or gateway) runs through the cottage addition, and there are various other windows. The glazing varies. The stable bays are roofed with graded slates, a sandstone ridge, and a brick wallhead stack. The cottage bays have more modern roofing and later ridge stacks. The statutory address was revised in 2018 to correct a typographical error; it was previously listed as 'Physgill House, Walled Garden and Stables'.
