Description

42 Canaan Lane is an earlier 19th century, plain two-storey, three-bay house featuring single-storey pavilions. The building is constructed from cream sandstone, with coursed and squared rubble and droved dressings. It has a base course, a banded cill course at the first floor, a banded eaves course, and cast-iron balconies on the first-floor windows facing south.

The north elevation, which was formerly the rear, has a centrally located architraved and corniced doorway, a roundel on the frieze, a panelled door, and an astragalled fanlight that has been painted over. Above this, there is a taller stair window with colored glass border glazing at the first floor. The outer bays contain single windows on both the ground and first floors. The single-storey pavilions have half-pitched roofs and each features a single window.

The south elevation, which was formerly the front, also has a centrally placed architraved and corniced doorway, with a single window above it at the first floor. The outer bays again have single windows on both floors. To the left, there is a side wing with a single window, and to the right, there is a modern single-storey glazed addition with a piend roof.

The east and west elevations feature single-storey pavilions at the ground floor, with the eastern pavilion having a secondary door and window flanking it. There is a single window in the central bay at the first floor.

The windows throughout the building are timber sash and case with plate glass glazing. The roof is piended and almost pyramidal, covered with slates, including those on the pavilions.

Inside, there is a stone stair at the front (formerly the rear) with a cast-iron balustrade. The interior also features tall rubble walls at the rear and sides, with a low wall at the front topped with flat coping, along with cast-iron pedestrian and carriage gates.
