Museum And Library, School Road, North Berwick

The Museum and Library on School Road in North Berwick is a simple Italianate building constructed in 1876. It has a rectangular plan and is two stories high, featuring minor additions. The exterior is made of squared and snecked rubble with ashlar dressings, raised cills, a base course, and band courses.

The west elevation, which is the front, is symmetrical with three bays, and the central bay is slightly advanced, breaking the eaves. It has a Thomsonesque doorpiece with an arched bipartite window above it, and a bell-cote with a slated pyramidal roof supported by voussoired arches at the center. The outer bays contain tripartite windows with roll-moulded lintels and a simply moulded architrave for the ground floor lights.

On the south side, there are three bays with a door located in a deeply recessed center bay. This side is mainly detailed like the front, but there is an unattractive porch addition at the eastern end. The north side is simpler, and there is a rear addition that is in sympathy with the scale and design of the original building. The windows feature a variety of lying-pane and small-pane glazing. The roof is slate with leaded flashings, and there are ashlar stacks.
