Description

1 The Quadrant in North Berwick is a curved terrace of two-storey houses built in the earlier to mid 19th century, with the buildings stepping down from numbers 1 to 5. The houses are three bays wide, except for number 9, which has two bays. They are constructed from squared, coursed, and stugged rubble that has been painted, with numbers 2 and 4 featuring painted margins only. The rear of the houses is rendered, and they have raised cills and a variety of glazing patterns. The doors are deep set and panelled, often with fanlights, and there is a variety of doorpieces. The roofs are slate, with plain skews and mutual gable stacks. There are various extensions and alterations at the rear, mostly dating from the 19th century.

The front gardens have low parapet walls with coping.

Number 1 features two canted bays added in 1903 at the ground floor, flanking a door with a consoled cornice and plate glass glazing. Rooflights were added in 1957.

Number 2 has a consoled corniced door and horizontal glazing.

Numbers 3 to 5 have pediments above their doors, with consoled pediments at numbers 3 and 4, and a pilastered doorpiece at number 5, which also has flanking tripartite windows at the ground floor. They feature a 4-pane glazing pattern.

Number 6 has a pilastered doorpiece and a full-height canted bay added to the right in 1897, which includes 4-pane and plate glass sash windows, while the remaining windows have small panes.

Number 7 also has a pilastered doorpiece, with an advanced window bay at ground floor to the left and a blind central sash window on the first floor, featuring small-pane glazing.

Number 8, known as Dunelm, has a consoled cornice and chamfered arrises on the door surround, a blind central sash window on the first floor, and 4-pane glazing.

Number 9 has a two-bay street elevation, with raised margins and cornices at the ground floor and corbel supports at the first floor. It features 6-pane upper sashes and plate glass lower sashes, with the entrance located from the north by Quadrant Lane.
