Description

Middlemains is a farmhouse dating from the mid to later 18th century, with earlier 19th century wings that have altered the original plan. The building is harled with painted, droved ashlar margins.

On the east elevation, the original gable end of the farmhouse features three two-storey bays at the center, with a later gabled porch addition at ground level flanked by oculi in the outer bays. There is a blinded window at the center of the first floor, flanked by windows, and a very small attic window in the gablehead. The 19th century single-storey, piend-roofed wings on either side slightly advance and have clasping quoins, each with ashlar quoins and a tripartite window; the return elevations of these wings are blank.

The south elevation has a wing projecting to the right, with a doorway to the outer left and a small window at the center, along with two first floor windows. The west elevation is largely blank, featuring a first floor window to the left and two small gablehead windows, with a line indicating a former addition at ground level. The north elevation leads to the steading and includes a harled lean-to in the re-entrant angle. The sash and case windows have 12-pane and plate glass glazing patterns. The steeply pitched roof has beak skewputts and is covered with grey slates, with end stacks that include thackstanes.
