Description

Begbie is a late 18th century farmhouse with a mid to later 19th century addition, designed in an L-plan. The main block features three asymmetrical bays on the south elevation, which is smooth rendered and lined to resemble ashlar, painted white with black painted window margins and ashlar quoins. There are four irregular windows on the ground floor and three on the first floor of the south elevation. The north elevation has two windows on the ground floor and one on the first floor. The east gable is blank, while the west gable has a piended lean-to. The farmhouse connects to the garden with two windows and two doors.

The north wing, added in the mid to later 19th century, consists of two bays made of coursed rubble, primarily brown sandstone, with ashlar sandstone rybats and quoins featuring raised margins, stugged and droved. The east elevation includes a four-panelled door with a segmental fanlight, flanked by windows, and there are two windows on the first floor. The west elevation has a stair window and one window on the first floor. The windows throughout are mainly timber sash and case, originally mostly 12-pane but largely replaced by 4-pane on the ground floor.

The roof is gabled with plain dressed skews, covered in grey graded Scotch slates. There are three gable stacks made of rubble with raised ashlar margins, two of which are harled and painted white, serving as main cans.

Additionally, there is a small single-storey brick cottage off the southwest of the farmhouse, constructed of brown brick with a single door and a single window on each elevation, featuring 12-pane sash and case windows, a skew, and a single brick stack. This cottage may have served as servant's quarters and is now stone. It adjoins Begbie Steading, which has a separate listing.

The gatepiers are square in section, made of sandstone ashlar with a cope and pyramidal cap, and there are wooden gates. These are set against a high rubble wall leading to the garden.
