Description
The East Range of the Begbie farm steading is a large complex likely built in the late 18th century, with some alterations made in the mid-19th century and further sympathetic refurbishments in the 1980s. The structure is constructed from random rubble of whinstone and sandstone, and all roofs are covered with red pantiles.
The south range is the oldest part, extending east-west and featuring a prominent cartshed/granary. This section includes six segmental arches supported by rubble piers, with the easternmost opening fitted with a two-leaf boarded door. Above the cartshed is the granary, which has six openings on both sides, mostly louvred, except for one two-leaf doorway on each side. To the west, there is a single-bay shed with a plain boarded door on the north side and one window in the gable. The eastern side of the range has ten irregular bays, including four plain boarded doors, one sliding door, and five windows with timber lintels, while the south elevation is blank. The margins and quoins of the cartshed/granary are broached and droved, with the rest of the stonework being roughly dressed. The windows are either fixed or louvred, and all roofs are gabled with skews, featuring two small stacks.
The north range is a large T-shaped shed that has been altered, with single-storey wings on either side of a central section that was originally two-storey. It has a large raised central doorway on the south side, with end doors on each of the flanking wings, while all other openings have been infilled. The dressings are roughly squared, broached, and droved, and there are two small stone lean-tos in the northeast angle of the return. The roof is piended, except for a skewed gable to the north.
The central range is a later addition, comprising a large shed with four parallel gabled sections arranged symmetrically. It features four large arched doorways on the north elevation, which are two-leaf and boarded, with two smaller doors in between. On the south side, there are two large sliding doors in the central sections, with slit vents above and two windows in each section—three of which are vertically slatted and one infilled. The side elevations are plain, with wooden boarding at the eaves, and the dressings are stugged and droved. The roofs have been renewed and altered, with the apparent removal of skews.
The east range is another later construction, a large gabled shed with a loft. It has a large doorway on the south gable, with a sliding door that has been replaced by a two-leaf boarded loft door above. The west elevation is symmetrical, featuring a central sliding door flanked by four vertically slatted windows. The dressings are stugged and droved, and the gables have ashlar skews.
