Description

5 Westfield Cottages is a row of four farm cottages built around 1860. These single-storey and attic cottages feature a symmetrical, eight-bay design with gabled roofs. The exterior is constructed from squared and snecked grey sandstone rubble, with dressings that are stugged and droved, and includes chamfered reveals and a corbelled eaves course.

The north elevation has eight windows, with two central bipartite windows that have wooden mullions and concrete lintels, which may have been later enlargements. The south elevation features four doorways and four windows on either side, along with two small central closet windows. The doors vary, with most being replacements of the original plain framed and lined doors.

The roof is interrupted by four dormers that align with the lower windows. These dormers are stone gabled with chamfered ashlar, have slated haffits, and overhanging verges. The gable elevations include lean-tos and outshots for sheds and a washhouse, featuring two doors and one window, as well as a single window in the upper gable.

Original windows predominantly consist of 12-pane timber sash and case designs, with three-pane windows at the gables. Some windows have been replaced, particularly with plate glass "tilt and turn" types on three of the dormers. The roof is covered in graded grey slate and features chamfered skews, moulded skewputts, and ball finials on the main gables, along with bargeboarding on the dormers and outshots.

There are three symmetrical yellow brick chimney stacks with stone copes and plain cans. A tall brick chimney is present on the washhouse outshot, which has been removed at the east gable. The north roofslope includes two original skylights and one modern Velux window.
