Description
The Chapel at Herdmanston dates back to the 13th century and was rebuilt around 1840. It is the remaining part of a former chapel built by Baron St Clairs, which later served as a burial vault. The structure is made of large cream ashlar blocks and features a slab roof. It has a rectangular plan measuring approximately 30 by 14 feet.
The eastern gable has a doorway with pilasters flanking a blinded pointed arch panel that springs above a cornice of a quasi-pedimented gablehead. The entrance includes angle pilasters and two-leaf boarded doors from 1840, adorned with decorative cast-iron fittings and a carved timber panel. There is a small pointed opening in the western gable, which is currently blocked. The northern elevation is blank, while the southern elevation has a centrally located window that is also blocked.
Inside, the chapel features a vaulted and white-washed interior, with two monumental slabs, one dating from 1594. There are several later memorial wall tablets present. A former door, which is studded and has a mask view-hole, is currently kept inside the chapel.
