Description
The dovecot at Herdmanston dates back to the 17th century and is a double lectern type, though it is currently in poor condition as of 1988. The structure is built from rubble with harl pointing and features ashlar dressings, along with two rat courses. It measures 30 feet by 18 feet in plan. Originally, there were two doorways on the south side, with small windows above the rat course and a blank panel in between. The eastern side of the south elevation is currently derelict. The position of two former dormers, which contained flight-holes, is indicated by large gaps in the purple slated roof. The dovecot has crowstepped skews and beak skewputts.
Inside, it was originally lined with 2,000 nesting boxes, each one foot deep.
