Description

Tanderlane Cottage is a pair of later 19th-century farm cottages, originally separate but now combined into a single dwelling. The cottages were constructed using squared and snecked, stugged sandstone, with chamfered arrises to the openings and stone hoodmoulds above the windows.

The south elevation, which faces the roadside, features a central tripartite window in each cottage. These are flanked by doorways with wide, low, timber porches topped with gabled consoles, and bipartites in the outer bays. The doorway of the left-hand cottage has been blocked and replaced with a single window. The west gable has a single window at its centre. A sympathetic gabled porch addition has been made to the east gable.

The north elevation, dated circa 1900, incorporates a harled section with a piend roof extension on the right, including a central lean-to porch; the outer bay to the left is blank. The windows throughout are sash and case designs with a horizontal-pane glazing pattern. Decorative timber bracketted barge boards adorn the gables, along with moulded stone eaves-putts. The roof is covered in purple slates. Moulded coping runs along the gable ends and mutual gable stacks.

The cottage is an example of a pattern book design, characterised by its hoodmoulds and porches. Rubble coped rubble retaining walls are located to the east and west. A steading lies to the northwest, but is not part of the listed building.
