Old Mill, Station Road, Gifford

The Old Mill on Station Road in Gifford dates back to 1725 and is a two-storey granary with a rectangular plan. It features a square-plan former kiln attached to the south and single-storey outbuildings added to the north by the early 19th century. The building has been converted for residential use. It is constructed of rubble pink sandstone with stugged squared dressings, and there are rendered concrete cill and lintel repairs at various intervals.

On the southeast elevation, the former kiln has a piend roof and is located to the right. It is adjoined by a gabled 19th-century boiler house or forge at ground level to the south, which has a brick stack. The kiln has a door flanked by a window on its west return and a small window above. The hayloft door merges with the door below, creating a vertical band to the left of the granary elevation, with another doorway in the re-entrant to the right and a first-floor window above.

The northeast elevation features a rectangular addition of outbuildings to the left and center, which have small square openings with timber surrounds, along with a later garage door inserted on the west return. The piend roof of the outbuildings sweeps into the main roof to the left of center, with altered granary openings visible under the eaves behind.

The west elevation is largely blank but shows masonry evidence of a former water wheel and includes two small square windows. During the conversion, timber casement windows were inserted. The granary and adjoining outbuildings are covered with purple slates, while the former kiln has pantiles.
