Description
Gifford Manse is a classically detailed house built in 1824, featuring two storeys and three bays, along with single-storey wings. The structure is made of rubble red sandstone with grey and red ashlar dressings.
On the south elevation, there is a corniced and pilastered doorpiece that includes a panelled door and a decorative fanlight. Tripartite windows are located on either side at ground level, with a single window in each first-floor bay. The slightly recessed single-bay wings on either side each have a window and an ashlar tablet above the parapet. The windows have hoodmoulds, and there is a moulded eaves cornice with a blocking course and a fluted tablet at the center.
The north elevation features a piend-roofed stair block that projects at the center, flanked by lean-to service buildings at ground level that project slightly to the right, containing one regular-sized window and a very small window. To the left, there is a gabled single-storey projection of the outer wing, which includes a door and a window on the west return.
The east elevation shows a single-storey wing with two windows flanking a smaller window, and the roof sweeps in a piend to a two-storey gable behind on the left.
On the west elevation, there is a tripartite window in the single-storey wing. The sash and case windows feature a 12-pane glazing pattern. There are five ashlar polygonal wallhead end stacks on a rubble base to the east and four to the west. The piend roof is covered with grey-green slates.
Additionally, there is an L-plan stable range, an earlier 19th-century gig-house located close to the rear of the house, which is adjoined to high coped rubble walls that form a service court. To the south of the house, there is a walled garden made of rubble sandstone, with a brick lining at the southern end and partly coped with squared stone.
