Description

The Anchorage is a detached villa located at 8 Bingham Terrace in Dundee, built in 1895 by Charles and Leslie Ower. This two-storey and attic building features stugged ashlar stonework and chamfered segment-headed openings.

The front of the villa has three bays, with the ends advanced and canted bays on both floors. The center features a three-bay verandah supported by slim turned columns with brackets and decorative screen work beneath the eaves. The roof is piended and slated, adorned with brattishing. On the west elevation, there is a three-window arrangement with a square single-storey porch that has Doric pilasters and glazed timber screens topped with a triangular pedimented doorpiece. The roof here is also piended and platformed, featuring brattishing.

The main slate roof is both piended and platformed, showcasing a decorative cast-iron parapet and a wrought-iron finial that encloses an octagonal ogee-roofed glazed cupola, which serves as a lookout for the shipowner. There are modern dormer extensions on each side, and a segmentally pedimented central tripartite dormer on the south front. The villa has sash and case windows with a two-pane glazing pattern, though the dormers have modern glazing. The slate roofs include fishscale detailing at the cupola and verandah, with terracotta ridges and tall corniced stacks.

Inside, there is a spacious hall featuring a screen of Corinthian columns. The property is complemented by octagonal gatepiers with rope mouldings and name panels, along with low garden walls.
