Description
40 Bingham Terrace in Dundee is a pair of symmetrical, two-storey semi-detached villas designed by Edward Tough (Hutton and Tough) in 1909. The buildings feature harled brick and expanded metal lath, with timber turrets and verandahs set on a rock-faced rubble-built base.
Each villa has inner gabled bays with triple light windows and octagonal angle towers that include five timber mullioned lights. The roofs are swept and adorned with Art Nouveau finials. The ground floor includes linking three-bay verandahs with recessed doors.
On the side elevations, there are large stair windows, some featuring painted glass. The rear of the buildings has projecting five-light mullioned and transomed bays that are set back. The roofs are covered with slate and have tiled ridges and ridge stacks. The windows originally had single-pane lower cases and four and six-pane upper cases, with an unusual glazing pattern on the stair windows.
The property is complemented by rubble-built retaining walls that include original mild steel railings and gates.
